Cairney Cycles
Community Interest Company
5 years of sole trader business has given Cairney Cycles a lot of opportunities, partners and challenges. As Connor grows his business he wants to get the community invovled to turn CC into a community owned social enterprise.
Into 2026 and beyond Connor will work with Newmains Community Trust to develop a community owned bike shop that focuses on adding value for those being trained and the cycle industry as a whole. We will develop a training centre to work in partnership with New College Lanarkshire and create a sustainable pathway for mechanic education in Scotland.
No one is better equipped than Cairney Cycles to lead the mechanic revolution and bring a pathway to the cycle industry for young potential engineers.

There are two potential routes to achieve the vision and we would love to hear what you'd like to see and how we can create a community owned bike shop that works for Newmains.
Option 1 - Education Centre

We work together with the Newmains Community Trust to take ownership of a space of land to create the Cairney Cycles training centre location alongside community rental shop.

We will work with New College Lanarkshire, Cytech, and the Institute of Motor Industry to bring Scotlands first ever college course for young bike technicians. This will bring business, opportunity and jobs to the area aloo centered around high quality education pathways with future employment opportunities.

The image below shows the blue area we propose to move to NCT ownership, Cairney Cycles training centre would operate at the old citizens advice building with secure fencing. We will jointly create a sustainable business plan to maintain ownership of the space, create long term careers and continue to grow Lanarkshires ability to get "oan yer bike."

North Lanarkshire has the opportunity to get behind Cairney Cycles and help put Lanarkshire on the map, working with key partners in Glasgow and Edinburgh our site in Newmains would be like any other seen in Scotland and provide a starting point for STEM education and bike technicians of the future. The first true cycle mechanic pathway seen in the U.K.

Option 2 - Garden space only
Option two would be a smaller approach to the cycling programme in Newmains. Cairney Cycles Ltd. would no longer become a community owned project as it would not be feasible to operate without the site.

The NCT would see volunteers continue the existing community rental scheme set up by Cairney Cycleswithin Newmains.

Our partnership would come to an end as Connor persues the educaiton route with New College Lanarkshire and other partners in a more appropriate facility.
